NHS Bursary for Students

The NHS Bursary is one of the most generous forms of funding for trainee NHS students and it is a means-tested bursary that offers a contribution to tuition fees. If you are in receipt of the NHS bursary then you may receive reduced funding on your maintenance loan from student finance and depending on your personal circumstances you may be eligible for extra funding. NHS bursaries can differ depending on the course you are studying, where you live, how much your household income is and whether you’ve received funding before.

From day-to-day expenses to rent and bills, the financial support provided reduces the stresses of future healthcare professionals, allowing them to focus on their studies and continue the life-saving work of the NHS.

NHS Bursary Eligibility

You will only receive the NHS bursary for medical students if you have been accepted for a place on a part-time or full-time NHS course (for undergraduate and postgraduate students) after 1st August 2018. If you are studying on a five or six-year course then you can apply for an NHS bursary from your 5th year, but if you are on a four-year accelerated course then you can apply from your second year.

You can apply for an NHS bursary for medical students by registering online for an NHS bursary account. Once you are logged into your account you begin the process. Please note the application process will still be the same even if you are an existing student.

The NHS Student Support Fund: NHS Grant for Students

The NHS Learning Support Fund offers additional training for healthcare students that are eligible. It is a form of financial support to help alongside the student loans system and was put in place to help support NHS students attending healthcare courses to gain the professional registration required. NHS Bursaries Social Work

Social work students have access to specific funds to help with study and living expenses, which they don't need to repay. However, there is a cap on how much people can receive a bursary such as the Social Work Bursaries each year. Therefore, universities are allocated a certain number of bursary places and it is up to them rather than the NHSBSA to decide which students will get the funding.

However, if you are not nominated for the NHS bursaries for social work then you may still be able to obtain additional funding such as Placement Travel Allowance. We recommend that you apply as soon as possible to increase your chances.
