Is King Charles’ coronation a bank holiday? Here is everything you need to know and more about the King’s Coronation weekend!

On Saturday, 6 May 2023 we will see another historical moment with King Charles III’s coronation at Westminster Abbey in London. The ceremony will mark the transfer of the monarch’s title and powers as King and the head of the Church of England. The Queen Consort, Camilla, will also be crowned during the coronation ceremony. All of the King’s Coronation plans have been code-named Operation Golden Orb.

Whether you are planning a King’s coronation street party to celebrate the special day or want to head down to London to see history unfold, here is everything we know about the King’s Coronation bank holiday.

Is King Charles’s coronation a bank holiday?

Yes! The good news is that there will an extra bank holiday for the coronation of King Charles III on Monday 8th May. Buckingham Palace announced various fun-filled and historical events over that weekend, from the Coronation ceremony on the 6th May and a concert and laser light show on 7th May at Windsor Castle.

Therefore, if you are looking for ways to make the most of your day off for the King’s coronation, you have plenty of options. It has also been announced that pubs, clubs, and bars across England and Wales will be allowed to stay open for an extra two hours over the coronation weekend.

Will there be a medal for Charles’s coronation?

The royal family marks the event with a commemorative medal for occasions such as jubilees and coronations. Therefore it is expected that there will be a King’s Coronation medal. The medal chosen will be for the King and the rest of the royal family, Armed Forces members, the police, public servers, and government officials. We know the King’s Coronation medal will be issued after the event.

For us regular folk, there are many different forms of King’s coronation memorabilia that you can buy to commemorate this historical event. These items include a King Charles’ coronation coin 2023, limited edition tea towels, and a range of coronation tote bags.

What time is King Charles III’s coronation?

The coronation will take place on Saturday, May 6, 2023. This is eight months since the King was automatically appointed as King after the death of Queen Elizabeth II on September 8 last year. The coronation service will start at 11am. This is the first-weekend coronation ceremony since 1902, when Edward VII was crowned King.

Will King Charles have the same crown?

During the historic ceremony at Westminster Abbey, Charles III will be crowned with St Edward’s Crown, just like Queen Elizabeth II was in 1953. St Edward’s Crown for the moment of crowning is a royal tradition dating back to the 17th century and is the only time it is ever used. Throughout the service, our new King will wear the Imperial State Crown.
