When is International Nurses Day?

International Nurses Day is celebrated annually on 12 May—a day with deep historical significance. This isn’t just any date; it marks the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the pioneering nurse who laid the foundations of modern nursing during the Crimean War.

Since its inception in 1974, this day has grown into a global celebration of the vital contributions made by nurses everywhere. How is International Nurses Day celebrated?

The International Council of Nurses creates and shares the International Nurses’ Day kit annually. This kit features important educational resources and public information for nurses worldwide.

Different countries have their own unique ways of commemorating this event. In the UK, for example, a special service takes place each year at Westminster Abbey in London. During this ceremony, a symbolic lamp is passed among nurses until it reaches the Nurses’ Chapel, where it is set on the High Altar. This gesture represents the transfer of knowledge and wisdom from one nurse to another.
