NHS staff are usually paid early in December, a few days before Christmas, because the normal end-of-month pay day lands in the middle of the bank holidays. Pay dates vary between NHS employers, so your exact date comes from your own payroll team. This guide covers what to expect in December 2026, how long that pay has to stretch, and what you’re paid if you’re working over Christmas.
When do NHS staff get paid each month?
There’s no single NHS pay day. Each employer sets its own monthly date, usually near the end of the month, and moves it earlier when it falls on a weekend or bank holiday. For example, the MWL Lead Employer pays on Wednesday 28 October and Friday 27 November 2026. Your payslip in ESR or your payroll team will confirm your date.
When will NHS staff be paid in December 2026?
Christmas Day falls on a Friday this year, so NHS employers bring December pay forward to land before it.
The Mersey and West Lancashire (MWL) Lead Employer has listed Tuesday 22 December 2026, subject to change. Last year, Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust paid its December salary on Tuesday 23 December and announced the date in late November.
To check your own date:
- Look at your payslip in ESR.
- Check your trust’s intranet or staff newsletter for a payroll announcement.
- Ask your payroll or HR team if nothing has been published yet.
NHS Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland pay dates
Health boards and trusts in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland set their own pay dates, and most haven’t published December 2026 dates yet. If you work for NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, NHS Lothian, NHS Grampian or another board, check your payslip or your board’s staff intranet. Bank holiday pay rates outside England also differ, so check your own terms with your employer.
Key dates for Christmas 2026
| Date | What’s happening |
|---|---|
| Tuesday 22 December 2026 | December pay day for MWL Lead Employer staff (subject to change) |
| Friday 25 December 2026 | Christmas Day bank holiday |
| Monday 28 December 2026 | Boxing Day bank holiday (substitute day, as 26 December is a Saturday) |
| Friday 1 January 2027 | New Year’s Day bank holiday |
| Tuesday 26 January 2027 | January pay day for MWL Lead Employer staff |
How long does December pay need to last?
December pay arrives early, but January pay goes back to the usual end-of-month date, so the gap between them is longer than normal. If you’re paid on 22 December and again on 26 January, that’s five weeks between pay days.
A few things make the gap easier:
- Check when your direct debits leave. Bills that come out on the 1st still come out on the 1st, so set that money aside when you’re paid.
- Split your pay in two. Move what you need for January into a separate pot on pay day, before Christmas spending starts.
What’s NHS bank holiday pay at Christmas?
Christmas Day, the Boxing Day substitute day and New Year’s Day are all bank holidays. Under Agenda for Change in England, every hour you work on a public holiday (midnight to midnight) gets an unsocial hours payment on top of your basic pay:
| Pay band | Public holiday rate (England) |
|---|---|
| Band 1 | Time plus 94% |
| Band 2 | Time plus 83% |
| Band 3 | Time plus 69% |
| Bands 4 to 9 | Time plus 60% |
On top of that:
- Time off in lieu. If you’re required to work on a public holiday, you’re also entitled to the equivalent time off in lieu at plain time, under Section 13 of the NHS Terms and Conditions of Service Handbook.
- Overtime. Overtime on a general public holiday is paid at double time.
- Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. These aren’t bank holidays, so normal unsocial hours rates apply.
- Boxing Day. This year 26 December is a Saturday and the bank holiday moves to Monday 28 December. If you’re working either day, check with payroll which one your employer pays as the public holiday.
These are the England rates. Staff in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, bank staff, doctors and anyone not on Agenda for Change should check their own contract or ask their employer.
