More About Joules

Joules is a British clothing company inspired by British country lifestyles and sells clothing and homeware products. The company was founded in 1989 by Tom Joules. He later described the business model as creating clothes with “colour, fun, and entertainment.” The brand started selling its clothing at country shows across the UK and later created its own clothing line in 1999. In 2018, the brand had 123 stores and a turnover of £185.9m. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the cost of living crisis in the UK, Joules UK went into formal administration in November 2022. On the 1st December 2022, UK retailer NEXT PLC secured the Joules company, and only 19 stores closed.

Hints & Tips

Joules was originally established in 1977 as Joule & Sons by Ian Joule. The company was later taken over in 1989 by Tom Joules. Joule & Sons initially sold branded accessories and clothing at country and equestrian shows after seeing a gap in the market for colourful country clothing. The brand offered an alternative to traditional styles, and Tom Joules’ initial manufacturing order of 100 pairs of pink Joules wellies sold out almost immediately.

The company was later rebranded as ‘Joules’ and aimed to sell branded goods at fairs. By 1997 Joules was successfully selling branded outdoor clothing at big shows and, in March 1999, even had its first Joules clothing collection. The first Joules store was opened in Market Harborough, Leicestershire. The Joules business strategy changed somewhat in 2001 when the foot-and-mouth outbreak in the UK caused almost all the shows that Joules sold at were cancelled. Instead, the company started selling clothing directly to retailers and started a mail-order catalogue channel in 2002, and its website was launched the following year.

The Joules collection of products has grown considerably over the years since it started at country shows and today includes the popular Joules bedding, Joules dog bed, and men’s Joules gilet. Other popular items include the famous Joules bee lunch bag and Joules hanging washbag, perfect for a weekend away!
