Join us in celebrating the 72st Birthday of our beloved NHS! Born out of a long-held ideal that good healthcare should be available to all, regardless of wealth.
The NHS was born on 5 July 1948 and for the first time ever, people were able to access healthcare from the cradle to the grave and for free at the point of use. It was the first time anywhere in the world that completely free healthcare was made available on the basis of citizenship rather than the payment of fees or insurance.
Today the NHS is the UK’s largest employer, with over 1.7 million staff from all over the world and more than 350 different careers. It is also the fifth largest employer in the world.
The last few months have been extremely hard and we’re all so thankful for the incredible work everybody, in every role has done to help, without you, we wouldn’t be where we are today.
The NHS is there to improve our health and wellbeing and to support us to keep mentally and physically well, to get better when we are ill and, when we cannot fully recover, to stay as well as we can to the end of our lives. The NHS touches our lives at times of basic human need, when care and compassion are what matter most.
The NHS belongs to the people and today we celebrate 72 years and pay our heartfelt thanks to all NHS staff all over the UK for their hard work and commitment.
